Wicker Foreign Trade: How to Meet New Requirements for Product Biological Testing and Plant Quarantine from Overseas Buyers

Overseas home furnishing buyers are continuously tightening quarantine requirements for natural plant-based woven products. Many wicker foreign trade factories tend to underestimate the risks brought by product biological testing when receiving orders. Some small and medium-sized factories believe that cargo can be exported smoothly as long as fumigation is completed. However, Europe, America, Southeast Asia and other regions have updated their plant quarantine lists in recent years. Beyond traditional fumigation certificates, new sampling items such as microorganism and pest residue testing have been added. Failed tests may lead to detention, return or even destruction of goods, along with high port detention and logistics losses.

As plant raw materials, willow branches may carry insect eggs and mold spores during harvesting, air-drying and storage. Simple conventional fumigation can only kill adult pests and hardly remove insect eggs hidden in gaps of willow strips. Mold is highly likely to grow under high humidity during long ocean shipping. Many foreign trade enterprises have encountered troubles in the past because they only conducted one-time fumigation before shipment without establishing pre-disinfection procedures for raw materials before warehousing. Raw materials with mildew or insect spots may enter production without screening. Even finished products look fine, they may fail random inspections at destination ports.

Well-established wicker factories implement standardized control systems and place quarantine management at the raw material stage. After harvesting, willow materials go through natural outdoor air-drying to control moisture content within 12%. Willow strips with high moisture are prone to mildew and pest infestation. After air-drying, raw materials are fumigated in sealed chambers for the officially required duration, followed by ventilation. Complete fumigation videos and batch records are kept. Each batch of raw materials is numbered separately to realize full traceability covering willow origin, processing and finished packaging. If problems occur in overseas sampling inspections, the corresponding raw material batch can be quickly located.

Apart from pest control, a growing number of European and American brand clients entrust third-party laboratories for independent microbial testing. The inspection focuses on mold, yeast and other indicators, which raises higher requirements for environmental management in factory workshops. Weaving workshops need stable humidity control and regular cleaning. Semi-finished product storage areas are placed on moisture-proof pallets to avoid moisture from the ground. During finished goods packing, moisture-proof paper and desiccants are added to inner packages to block moisture from cabin environments and reduce mildew risks during long sea transport.

For foreign trade teams, sales staff should confirm the latest quarantine regulations of buyers’ countries at the early negotiation stage, and verify whether extra third-party test reports are required. Supplementary documents should not be arranged after production. Prepare documents including certificates of origin, fumigation certificates and raw material traceability records for different destinations. Some large overseas brands arrange factory audits to inspect raw material disinfection, warehousing and workshop management. Factories need to organize complete records in advance for audits.

For small and medium-sized foreign trade factories, plant quarantine is not a one-time certificate application, but continuous management covering raw materials to shipment. As entry regulations for plant products worldwide become stricter, suppliers with stable biological testing compliance can secure long-term European and American brand orders, reduce cargo losses and compensation risks caused by quarantine issues, and build differentiated competitiveness in the natural woven goods export sector.
