Knitting: The Metamorphosis from Straw Rope to Art

Braiding involves weaving threads and cords into various patterns, nets, and ornaments. This craft is incredibly interesting, not only practical but also beautiful. Known in ancient times as "jiangzi" or "luozi," it is considered the "eldest brother" of traditional Chinese crafts.

Weaving crafts are primarily the product of local laborers, using local materials and incorporating local traditions. Bamboo weaving is particularly popular in the south, where bamboo is plentiful; willow weaving is particularly developed in the north, where willow is plentiful. Materials are rarely sourced from other regions, making it a deeply rooted craft.

Bamboo weaving involves processing bamboo into soft strips and threads before weaving. The production process is meticulous, beginning with the bamboo being broken into strips and threads of various sizes. These strips are then steamed, dyed, shredded, scraped, trimmed, polished, and woven into a variety of daily necessities and ornamental items. There are numerous varieties of bamboo weaving, ranging from large items like tables, chairs, cabinets, beds, screens, and bed mats to small items like fruit boxes and baskets, even small desk ornaments and toys.

Straw weaving involves weaving with various flexible grasses. The straw generally needs to be processed before braiding. Some need to be combed and split, some need to be fumigated and bleached, and some need to be braided first. Straw weaving primarily produces practical items, with fewer ornamental items. Techniques include knotting, plaiting, twisting, rubbing, twisting, stringing, and coiling. Patterns include cross-grid, herringbone, rice-grid, geometric patterns, and textual patterns, requiring exceptional craftsmanship.

Willow weaving is woven from willow branches, including kudzu, white wax, and vitex. Products include baskets, baskets, boxes, cases, and trays, which are lightweight, sturdy, and affordable. Willow weaving is widely distributed, with Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, and Jiangsu being the most common regions.

Rattan weaving is woven from rattan. Rattan is tough and flexible, corrosion-resistant, waterproof, lightweight, and durable. It is commonly used to make fruit baskets, vegetable baskets, sleeping mats, chair screens, tables, and shelves. Rattan weaving is primarily produced in Yunnan, Guangdong, and Jiangxi provinces.

The charm of knotting lies in the fact that ordinary straw ropes, bamboo strips, and willow branches are transformed into exquisite works of art through the skillful hands of artisans. These knotted crafts are not only beautiful but also extremely practical. From the simple knots of the Neolithic Age to the exquisite handicrafts of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the development of knotting is truly fascinating.

In short, knotting is an important part of traditional Chinese crafts. It not only demonstrates the ingenuity of the working people but also transforms ordinary materials into works of art with extraordinary charm.
