Observations on Wicker Products at Phase 2 of Canton Fair 2026 – Shifts in Overseas Buyers’ Requirements

Phase 2 of the 2026 Spring Canton Fair has concluded. Wicker manufacturers from core production regions including Linshu in Shandong and Funan in Anhui showcased their goods, releasing valuable market signals for foreign trade practitioners. Unlike previous years when buyers mainly inquired about basic storage baskets, overseas purchasers at this fair focused more on traceable raw materials, green certifications and custom designs. Many exhibiting wicker factories reported that European clients directly requested traceability records of willow cultivation, BSCI and ISO14001 environmental certificates during negotiations. Samples without complete qualifications can hardly secure intent orders even at lower prices.

In terms of concluded deals, order growth for traditional solid-color basic storage baskets has moderated. Cross-border innovative items such as garden wicker baskets, wicker pet beds and picnic baskets with fabric liners gained greater popularity. Buyers from Spain and Germany accounted for a notably higher proportion of on-site signings. Their purchasing representatives mentioned that EU green trade regulations keep tightening. Local supermarkets are phasing out plastic storage alternatives, creating expanding market room for natural woven goods. However, strict thresholds are imposed on dyes and auxiliary materials. Many buyers no longer compare unit prices only and are willing to pay a reasonable premium for compliant, traceable products.

A key point often overlooked by foreign trade clients: green certifications are not one-off paper documents. Overseas brands conduct unscheduled supply chain audits. Non-compliance with environmental standards at any stage, from willow planting, fumigation to dyeing, may lead to detention of the whole shipment. The Wicker Industry Association hosted special training sessions during the fair, reminding exporters to maintain raw material harvesting logs and production wastewater treatment files to build full supply chain archives, in addition to product certifications.

The fair also exposed existing industry pain points. Small workshop-style factories mostly lack standardized raw material control, leading to inconsistent quality between samples and bulk goods. Without environmental certifications, they can only take low-margin sporadic orders. In contrast, large-scale factories with self-owned willow plantations secure more long-term brand orders thanks to stable raw material supply and complete compliance credentials. For foreign trade suppliers, the era of simple price competition is over. Raw material traceability, eco-friendly production and design innovation will become core competitive edges for future overseas orders.
