Flat-stitch hemming: Keep the basket rim crisp and smooth.
Hemming is the finishing touch to a woven basket and directly impacts its overall aesthetic. Take a 60cm long hemp rope and leave a 3cm end around the edge of the basket. Use scissors to thread the end from the inside to the outside and secure it. Next, work from right to left, wrap the rope around the warp (longitudinal) threads at the edge of the basket and tie a half-hitch. Tighten the knot with each wrap to ensure a tight fit.
The key is to "repeatedly press": For the second wrap, pass the end of the rope under the knot of the first, creating a staggered pattern. After completing the final wrap, pass the end of the rope from the inside, tie a knot with the original end, trim off any excess, and secure with glue. This creates a smooth, crisp hemming rim that won't snag on clothes when storing fruit or other items.
Reinforced handles: The secret to doubling the weight capacity
The handles are the "load-bearing point" of the storage basket, so reinforcement should begin during the weaving process. Choose two thicker hemp ropes (approximately 5mm in diameter) as the main handle cords, leaving a 30cm length on each side of the basket. When you've reached 1/2 the height of the basket, cross the main ropes with the warp threads of the basket, tying a knot after every three wraps to ensure the main ropes are integrated with the basket.
Add extra twist to the center of the handle: fold the two main ropes in half and wrap a thin hemp rope around the midpoint five times to create a non-slip knot. Finally, use needle and thread to sew the ends of the handles to the edge of the basket and tie a knot, keeping the stitches within 1cm. This reinforced handle can easily lift up to 5kg and can be used to carry heavy items such as laundry detergent and rice and flour without risk of breakage.
The finished product has a versatile use: versatile storage.
The hemp rope basket made using this method can be used in the kitchen to store spatulas and dishcloths, as the natural hemp rope is breathable and moisture-resistant. It can also be used in the living room to store remote controls and charging cables, instantly arranging messy items. It can also be used on the balcony to display potted succulents, where the hemp rope and greenery complement each other beautifully.
The warmth of handcrafting is hidden in the details: the fine lines of the flat-stitched hem and the sturdy knots at the handles make this storage basket more than just a tool; it's an expression of your lifestyle. Try making your own, and you'll discover that handmade objects always bring a sense of security and love.
